Getting the best voice-over results is about more than using quality tools and hiring the best writers. Even hiring the hottest voice talent can only get you so far. The truth is, the most inexperienced artists can be amazing voice actors. All they need is the right input from the guy sitting behind the sound desk.

The purpose
Always make sure that the talent knows exactly what the purpose of the script is. Or in other words, who the target market is. Are they teenage boys or elderly ladies? This will certainly have an effect on the tone and rhythm. The more information you share with your talent, the better the outcome will be.
The LOGISTICS
Always make sure all the following has been taken care of before starting the session:
- Proper setup of all equipment.
- Preparation of all necessary documents.
- Answering of questions with regards to script and pronunciation.
COMMUNICATION
Never stop giving feedback between takes. The voice talent will rely on you for it. Even the most experienced voice actors will need ongoing feedback to give their best. Explaining the script beforehand and leaving the rest over to the talent is never a good idea.
Time management
A large part of your job as director is to set up timetables. You need to make sure that every hour is used as productively as possible, because as we know, time is money. And this is especially true in recording studios, where most people are paid the hour. That being said, you also have to know when to schedule breaks for your talent.
The TONE
Be ready to set the tone when you come into work. And by this I don’t mean the tone of the script. I’m referring to the tone of the room or the Atmosphere. You have to make sure that the talent is in a space where they’re relaxed and confident, and able to deliver their best.
