Ukraine news on how some use music to escape the horrors and how some use it to rally support – Part 1
The music setting in Ukraine was once a thriving, diverse scene of all styles and genres, which grew exponentially in this country after the 2014 revolution. Now, Russia’s invasion has put its future at risk, and its world has been turned upside down.
Guitars, pianos, and other musical instruments were left behind while their owners grabbed essentials like clothes and water before rushing out of their cities to escape to the borders. However, even among the tumultuous chaos that has become their daily lives, music has become – more than ever before – a platform for artists to help the cause in Ukraine, whether it is to provide a release, a momentary escape, or a beacon of hope to the war-torn country and its people.
Eurovision – or lack of it?
Jamala, a Ukrainian composer and singer who prevailed at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest with her well-known song “1944,” has made it to Turkey after being forced to escape her country because of Russia’s aggression.
Safe after the struggles she experienced during her formidable journey to Turkey with her two children, the well-known singer remembers her horror when the first bomb fell on Kyiv. And her determination to make her voice known to the world on this issue.
“Because this war must end, and everyone should say no to this war,” Jamala said.
Expressing her gratefulness to Turkey, its people and the President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan with his open arms for Ukrainian refugees, Jamala went on to say, “Turkey, as it has for centuries, opened its doors to the end, without expecting anything in return, due to its humanitarian responsibility and conscience.”
The sound of bombshells and air raid sirens may currently fill the air of Ukraine, but we look forward to the days when soul-tugging symphonies and heart-pumping performances fill the hearts of all that live in this land.
Peace To Ukraine 💙💛
