Auditioning for voice-over jobs can be daunting, especially if you’re new to the business. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your auditions and how to do the recordings.

Be in character, even when you are only saying your name and what you’re auditioning for on the first take. If you slate in your own voice, you might be judged before you even start reading the lines.
Familiarise yourself with the casting spec
Make sure you understand exactly what type of tone and rhythm they are looking for. Just studying the script is not enough. Stick to their specs and if you want to try a different angle, keep it for the 2nd or 3rd take.

Make sure you know how to say and practice all the words in the script before recording your audition. Getting the pronunciation of words wrong, especially names, will limit the chances of getting your audition heard by the client. So make sure to Google any words that you may be unsure of.

Recording extra takes each line will ensure that the producer has something to work with when you reach the short list.

There’s no need to record your audition in a professional recording studio, but whichever method you use, make sure the audio is clear. You can even record on your phone. Just make sure there’s minimal noise in the background.
